Objectives of the course

This is a professional development course consisting of two modules, which may be taken separately. The course is aimed at exploration and mine geologists, resource analysts, mining engineers, and anyone acting in the role of “qualified” or “competent” person.

  1. Module 1: Days 1-2 (Tuesday/Wednesday): An overview of the resource estimation process and best practice guidelines, an introduction to geostatistics and practical resource classification.
  2. Module 2: Day 3 Workshop (Thursday): SRK will demonstrate a typical approach to modelling and the use of selected software packages to facilitate both geological modelling and resource estimation.

Who should attend?

Module 1 is designed for engineers, exploration and mine geologists, who wish to broaden their understanding of geological modelling and requirements for a Mineral Resource Estimate. Module 2 will be suitable for attendees of module one and geologists, who have experience with the MRE process.

Attendees will learn

  • how simple exploratory data analysis tools can facilitate resource estimation
  • when and how geostatistics can improve resource estimates
  • how geostatistics can help categorise resources in an objective manner
  • the principles of reporting codes.

Programme

Module 1 Beginners Day 1: Overview of Mineral Resource Estimation – Why Model?

  • Sampling, Data Quantity and Quality – The Importance of getting this right
  • Geological modelling and domaining
  • Software options
  • What is a semi-variogram and what is the influence on my estimate?

Module 1 Beginners Day 2: Basic Statistics and Theory of Geostatistics

  • Defining a search neighbourhood
  • Grade Interpolation – What are the options and best practice?
  • Validation of models
  • Mineral Resource classification and reporting codes

Module 2 Workshop Day 3: Software and Integration of Packages – An SRK approach

  • Introduction to modelling based on an SRK approach
  • This module will discuss using examples of the methods SRK use to review/model different deposits
  • A practical demonstration showing different software packages and how they can be integrated to generate robust geological models and Mineral Resource Estimates

A full set of PowerPoint slides will be provided to each participant. Additional reference material will also be provided electronically.
