Managing Risk in the Mining Industry


SRK Consulting and UNEP presentation to the Association of Mining Analysts, 8th June 2000


In response to the recent accident at the Baie Mare operation in Romania, SRK and UNEP gave a brief presentation to members of the Association of Mining Analysts (AMA) in London on 8th June, 2000 on the key issues that investors and lenders in gold operations need to be aware of to properly assess and manage risks.

Wanda Hoskin, Senior Programme Officer (Mining) for the United Nation's Environmental Programme (UNEP), opened the presentation outlining the UNEP's findings of the root causes behind these type of events and their opinion on the actions that need to be taken to ensure that mines operate without causing unnecessary environmental damage.

David Pearce, Senior Mining Engineer, and Dr Rob Bowell, Principal Geochemist, from SRK (UK) Ltd:

  • Reviewed the factors behind public concerns and legislative trends
  • Clarified the facts about cyanide, its use and its toxicology
  • Identified alternative options for recovering gold
  • Discussed the relative merits of different cyanide destruction systems
  • Reviewed recent cyanide spills and their the impact
  • Summarised the risk assessment process, and
  • Outlined key issues for managing risk in operations using cyanide
